Another Lorentz Solar Pump Installation

Goulburn Water Systems were recently asked to supply and install another Lorentz Solar Pumping system at Windellama, 40km southeast of Goulburn. He wanted a water supply to wash down motorbikes and perhaps to grow a bit of grass. A bore had been drilled close to his weekender and had good yield and good quality water available. The only obstacle: No power available! Goulburn Water Systems were able to recommend a suitable pump, panel and controller combination which would meet his requirements and more. The system was a Lorentz 1100 Watt (6 panels) Helical Rotor pumping system delivering an average of 7,100 to 9,500 Litres per day to a 5000 Gallon tank approximately 850m away and 30m above. The system took less than a day to install, once the concrete footing had been poured, and the tank was full 2 days later. Our client now has an excellent water supply and is planning what he is going to do with it.

Solar Pump Installation

Goulburn Water Systems have recently installed this solar pumping unit as part of a CMA project. The client had an excellent permanent waterhole that is also subject to occasional flooding. The brief was to provide a pumping system which would reliably reticulate water around his property, but also be able to stay out of the way of any storm flows coming downstream.

The pump chosen was a Lorentz PS600 HR07, 525 Watt Helical Rotor submersible pump powered by 3 Astronergy 175 watt panels. Lorentz were the preferred choice due to their large range of pumps (which meant that the correct pump for the job could be chosen) as well as their rugged (cast stainless steel) construction. It was installed inside a 6" PVC pipe which was concreted into the creek bank, placing the pump below flood water flows and away from any fast moving debris. The panels and controller were installed above the high water mark along with the pressure system.

Lorentz are the largest manufacturer of solar pumps in the world with distributors on every continent and almost every country. Because Lorentz only manufacture solar pumps, their expertise in this specialist field is second to none. Additionally, Lorentz has invested heavily in system specification software with their Compass software. Compass allows the system designer to change every parameter of the system (right down to cable diameter and dust on the panels) to determine the optimal configuration. Liquid Fertiliser Storage Made Easy By Bushmans

The farming season across Eastern Australia is shaping up to be a very good year with a full soil moisture profile and the excellent commodity prices. The planned use of fertilisers will be one of the inputs that will help maximise yields and returns this year. Liquid fertilisers are the fastest growing form of crop nutrients as they are easy to use and apply, can be applied in conjunction with crop protection products, distribute the fertiliser to the crop more easily than solids and allow the simple flexibility of split applications. Additionally liquid fertilisers have the flexibility of being able to add trace elements easily when required. Many organic based fertilisers also come in a liquid form and need to be stored on farm in bulk.

On Farm Storage Provides Ease and Flexibility

To maximise the benefits of liquid fertilisers, on farm storage is the key and it is important that the right product or tank is used for storage. The Fertiliser tank used must be compatible with the different types of products, must be well designed and robust, and have an easy design for filling and empting. The most important element is the tank must be robust enough to hold the weight of the fertiliser and have fittings that are strong enough to withstand the rigours of continual use.

A well designed fertiliser tank needs to have the following features;

· To be designed and tested so it is able to hold 1.5 times the weight of water. This is a key issue as tanks designed for water will not be able to hold fertiliser safely and will most likely fail.

· The inlet system has to allow the tanker driver to top fill the tank from the ground quickly and simply. This will provide a safe working environment as well as speed up the process of filling.

· The outlet at the bottom should be large enough to allow the fast flow of product out of the tank minimising the time taken to fill the spray unit.

· The outlet should also have a system in place to make sure the tank can be completely emptied. This is important so there is not wasted product left in the bottom of the tank.

· A level gauge will help prevent the overflow of the fertiliser from the tank plus it will show you when it is time to order another load.

· An overflow is required in cases where the tank inadvertently is over filled.

· All fittings must be robust and strong.

The strength and toughness of the tank will minimise the risk of leaks which will result in loss of product and potentially can cause a contamination issue.

Flooded pools - a procedure to get them back in shape.

Recent news has indicated that parts of Southern Australia have been experiencing floods and/or constant downpours. Several towns in regional Victoria remain on high alert and many residents have been warned to prepare for more floods. Floods aside, nearly all Australian states have recorded from above average to record rainfalls this year to date.

If a pool has been susceptible to heavy rainfall, it is likely to have gained much dirty water and is now full of mud and other debris from gardens and other various contaminants. Although a dirty, clouded and flooded pool is a huge inconvenience, the pool can be used soon after if it is treated promptly after the weather subsides. The following procedure is recommended to rectify flooded pools.

Step 1. Check the pump, filter and other mechanical parts of the pool system for damage. If there is any damaged equipment, see the applicable manufacturer for instructions or replacement parts.

Step 2. Remove all debris from the pool. The water has probably brought in leaves and other debris from the surrounding areas. They will add large amounts of organic matter to the water, which in turn will cause issues with algae and chlorine residual. The sooner rubbish is removed from the pool; the sooner
clean-up can begin.

Step 3. Use Power Floc to drop the clay and dust that has clouded up the pool to the bottom. Remember that overdosing Power Floc will not make the job work faster. Please consult a BioGuard dealer for any issues.

Step 4. Vacuum the debris formed from the Power Floc to waste.

Step 5. Turn on and leave on the pump/filter till water balance has been achieved. From now, much of the debris should have been removed from the water. Although still cloudy, the filter is the easiest way to clean up the water.

Step 6. Test for metals and treat accordingly. The pool water may look a lot clearer than the start, but there may be many dissolved particles within the pool that came in with the dirt and clay. If there is a residual of metals (copper/iron) it can cause permanent staining, especially when chlorine is added back to the pool.
If metals are discovered in the pool, use a treatment of Pool MagnetTM to keep the metals in solution, and then add the filter aid Quick ClearTM to remove the metals from the water. Always recheck for metals after the initial treatment.

Step 7. Test for chlorine demand and treat accordingly. The flood water has washed an incredible amount of organic and inorganic material into the pool. Although most of it has been cleared out, there are still large amounts dissolved within the water. These particles can cause a huge drain on the chlorine added to the water to keep it healthy. If the pool owner has access to an Accu-DemandTM 30 testing station, it can be used to determine the exact amount of chlorine needed to add to oxidise all of these particles. If access to
an Accu-Demand 30 is not available, multiple large doses of chlorine may be required to be able to hold a chlorine residual. The best starting point is to add shock doses as per the label instructions of Burn Out Extreme until a chlorine residual can be held at 3 ppm. If there is difficulty in holding the residual for
long, then double the dose until it can be held.
